Reader's Retreat

Living in Spreydon suited my clients well and due to the size and layout of their section they decided to build a new home for themselves at the back of the section.

The brief focused on their desire to allow for as much daylight as possible, to have an open gallery on the mezzanine level and to accommodate bookshelves wherever possible to exhibit their vast collection of books.

Another important part of the project brief was that the kitchen should be connected to an outdoor kitchen on the exterior deck.

As a design solution the ground floor comprises of an open plan kitchen, dining and living space with a skillion roof, which allows for additional high windows for increased daylight.

The kitchen has a door leading directly to the exterior deck where an outdoor kitchen is installed behind a timber screen for privacy.

One bedroom, bathroom and the laundry are also located on the ground floor.

The main feature of the living space is a custom-made bookshelve going up to the mezzanine level and acting as a balustrade for the gallery.

On the mezzanine level is the main bedroom, bathroom and the gallery with storage cupboards underneath the sloping roof.
